Those who successfully complete an accredited New York State Department of Health asbestos certification training course are eligible to receive a New York State Department of Labor Asbestos Certification specific to the asbestos activities they intend to perform. This certificate enables those who complete a course to work in the asbestos abatement industry.
Each of the approved asbestos curriculums requires an annual refresher course in order to continue working in the industry. This refresher course is either 4 or 8 hours depending on the curriculum.
Allied Trades
This course is intended for tradesmen who perform maintenance or repair activities inside an asbestos abatement work area, but do not remove asbestos materials. This can also include building maintenance personnel, management, and utility staff members.

Contractor/Supervisor
Person who performs supervision of persons (other than authorized visitors) permitted to enter the regulated abatement work area during an asbestos project and the duties of the OSHA competent person. This person provides direction to those engaged in asbestos abatement activities.

Handler
Person who performs duties on an asbestos project including removal, encapsulation, application, enclosure, or disturbance of asbestos materials within the regulated abatement work area.

Inspector
Person who performs asbestos inspections/surveys including the collection of bulk samples to identify the presence, location, quantity, and friability of asbestos materials.

Operations & Maintenance
Person who performs operations, maintenance, and/or repair activities which may disturb Minor quantities of asbestos. This is intended for those building maintenance staff who perform operations termed by applicable regulations as "small scale / short duration."

Project Monitor/Air Sampling Technician
Person who oversees the scope, timing, phasing, and remediation methods on an asbestos abatement project. This course also permits the certificate holder to perform the duties of air sampling before, during, and after an asbestos project.

Project Designer
Person who plans the scope, timing, phasing, and remediation methods to be utilized on an asbestos abatement project. As per NYSDOL requirements, a certified Project Designer is the only certificate holder able to petition NYS for a Site Specific Variance. NYS Education Department also requires that a certified Project Designer submit asbestos abatement plans for upcoming projects.
